The Next Phase of New gTLDs Begins

Are you ready for new generic top level domain names (gTLDs)? ICANN is releasing the results of its initial evaluations of all the new gTLD applications on a weekly basis, and we’re really excited! It won’t be long before you can begin placing orders for the domains you want.

new gTLD Launches Begin – The first new gTLDs were given the green light to start their integration processes in late April, starting with TLDs using non-English characters (called IDNs). Each new gTLD will have its own go-live timeline, but will typically follow these basic phases:

Sunrise (Usually 30 to 60 days) – Trademark owners can claim their domains before they’re publicly available. Domains contested by multiple trademark owners will typically go to auction.

Landrush (Usually 30 days) – Anybody can claim domains. Domains in Landrush typically cost more to register with contested domains going to auction.

General Availability – Now the general public can register an available domain. Domains are usually first-come-first-serve, but some TLDs may have a pre-order system in place before General Availability opens.
